KARIMNAGAR: Even as the police have taken action against private lenders, the harassment of borrowers pushing them to take the extreme step continues unabated. In the latest such incident. a 26-year-old killed himself by consuming pesticides after being repeatedly harassed by a loan shark in Karimnagar.
The victim was identified as Marka Prashanth from Annaram village of Manakondur mandal. After being repeatedly harassed by the moneylender for not being able to repay his debt, he consumed pesticides at his home on Friday. He also left a suicide note in which he describes how repeated harassment by the lender demanding very high interest forced him to take the extreme step.
Sources close to Prashanth said he worked as a farmer. He had borrowed some money from moneylender Mudrakola Ramanjaneyulu who also belongs to the same village. Prashanth paid up to 15% interest on the loan amount. After facing losses in farming, he was unable to pay more and with interest, the unpaid amount reached Rs 20 lakh.
In the suicide note, he also apologized to his five-month-pregnant wife and her parents for taking the extreme measure. He asked his brother to take care of his parents. He told the family member not to pay a single rupee to the money lender because of whom he was forced to take the extreme measure.
Police said one case has been registered and investigations are ongoing.
